Documents and diffs

Have Ask Dockli draft or edit Office documents, then review exactly what it will write in a side-by-side diff before anything is saved.

Last updated: July 2026

Ask Dockli doesn’t just find and organize files — it can author them. Ask it to draft a Word document, build a spreadsheet, or outline a PowerPoint deck, or to edit an existing Office file, and it prepares the change for your review. Crucially, nothing is written until you approve it: Dockli always shows you a side-by-side preview first.

Asking Dockli to create or edit a document

Just describe what you want in plain language. For example:

  • “Create a Word document called Vendor Summary with a heading and a bulleted list of our top five vendors.”
  • “Make a spreadsheet of the Q4 figures from the attached report.”
  • “Draft a short deck outlining next quarter’s priorities.”
  • “Edit the Proposal.docx in this folder — tighten the introduction and add a Timeline section.”

Dockli can generate Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx) and PowerPoint (.pptx) files. For an edit, it reads the current document first so the change is grounded in what’s actually there. To have Dockli work from a specific source document, attach it or point it at a file in the folder.

The review card (before / after diff)

Instead of silently writing the file, Dockli renders a document diff card in the conversation. It’s a side-by-side, VS Code-style comparison:

  • The header shows the document’s name and type — for example “New Word document” for a fresh file, or “Updated Excel spreadsheet” for an edit — plus a running tally of +added and removed lines.
  • The left column is Before (for a brand-new file it reads “Before (new document)” and is empty); the right column is After.
  • Added lines are marked with +, removed lines with , so you can see exactly what will change.

Very large documents show the first several hundred lines in the card with a note that the rest can be reviewed in the file once it’s created.

Approving or discarding

The card has two actions:

  • Discard — cancel the operation. Nothing is written.
  • For a new file, Create document; for an edit, Apply changes. This resumes the paused request and writes the file. While it saves, the button reads “Creating…”.

Because the diff is generated before the write, this is your chance to catch anything wrong — a mis-titled document, an unwanted section, a wrong figure — and discard it with zero side effects.

Nothing is saved until you confirm

The document diff card is a confirmation step. Ask Dockli never creates or overwrites an Office file on its own — you always see the before/after and click Create document or Apply changes first.

Edits are saved as new versions

When Dockli edits an existing document, it does not overwrite your history. The change is saved as a new version of the file, and every earlier version is preserved in SharePoint / OneDrive version history. If you ever need to go back, you can restore any prior version — Dockli can do this for you on request, or you can use Dockli’s built-in version history. This means you can let Dockli iterate on a document freely, knowing each save is recoverable.
